"China’s economic strength versus her political strength in global affairs"
Victor Gao was the English interpreter to China’s great leader, Deng Xiaoping, from 1984 to 1988, a time when China was in the throes of opening up and reforming. Victor Gao, who speaks fluent English and is based in Beijing, boasts a JD degree from Yale Law School, an MA in International Relations from Yale Graduate School, an MA in English Language and Literature from the Beijing University of Foreign Studies, a BA in English from Suzhou University, and is a licensed attorney-at-law in the State of New York. Victor Gao comes with a unique mix of domestic and global experiences and expertise from both the public and private sectors, including CNOOC, Morgan Stanley, CICC and more.
Victor Gao will share his insights on the importance of China’s economic strength compared with her political strength in the arena of global affairs. He would speak on this complex but vital subject. Given the current state of affairs between China and the US, his thoughts would greatly aid us in understanding president Xi’s message to the world. For example, his promotion of the “Made in China 2025” and how it would impact the multi-faceted relationships between China and the rest of the world.
"The implications of China’s Belt and Road Initiative for the participating countries"
Truly a remarkable lady, Dr. Goh ChorChing’s impressive academic achievements include a BA and MA from Yale University and a PhD from Harvard University, all in economics. With her incredibly profound knowledge of China and her rich experience, Dr. Goh is certainly one of the best people to accurately explain the implications of China’s Belt and Road Initiative for the many participating countries. It is high time that Malaysians seize the unique chance to learn about the Belt and Road Initiative, stripped of geopolitics, rubbish and hidden agendas.

"How does Africa perceive China ? "
A Kenyan intellectual and an expert on security and strategic issues, Professor Peter Kagwanja is chief executive of the Nairobi-based think-tank, Africa Policy Institute. Professor Peter Kagwanja holds a PhD from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where he studied Politics, History, International Law and African Studies. He also holds an MA and a Bachelor’s degree from Kenyatta University. Often seen as a faraway continent, how often do we think about Africa ? Occasionally ? Maybe never. China does – all the time in fact. Why ? In the next 40 years, Africa will add more than 1.3 bln people, the equivalent of India. Africa is the 2nd largest continent in the world and yet, the China-Africa relationship is often overlooked.
How does Africa view China ? For instance, China’s Belt and Road Initiative opens a big window of opportunity for Africa to spur her economic growth and unleash her immense potential. In view of the importance of China-Africa relationship, we believe that Professor Peter Kagwanja will be able to enlighten our participants on the African perspective. We believe that this is the first time that such an important talk of this kind has been organised in Malaysia.
